NEW Vegetarian omega 3 sources allow alternative dieters like Oprah, the same or better omega 3 benefits December 8, 2008

By Scott Doughman, PhD

vegetarian DHA benefitsVegetarians and vegans already have a diet that has been shown as beneficial for lowering the risk of heart problems and other diseases prevented by some 'good' fatty acids.  Now algae oil gives you the maximum benefit of omega 3s.

Like most daily diets, these vegetable-based diets are low in omega 3 fats, often called alpha-linolenic acid, which allows your body to produce some trace levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaeoic acid (EPA). These fats are the ones most people lack regardless of their diet, but DHA and EPA are also the most beneficial.

Omega 3 benefits are generally associated with fish and fish oil, but those are not the only food sources rich in fatty acids. Flax oil and milled flax seeds are the richest vegetarian omega 3 sources. For an additional source of omega 6 and omega 3 sources, consider algae oi.  The benefitical C22 omega-3 called DPA is richest in algae oil, an ideal brain food oil for some people.

Vegetarian Omega 3 Fortified Foods

Eggs are one food that has added omega 3 benefits because they are often naturally fortified by feeding the chickens an abundance of flax seeds. Milk producers and yogurt companies frequently add vegetarian based ALA as well. For strict vegetarian diets, however, these foods are off the list, but it doesn't mean that they can't enjoy the health benefits.

Several brands of margarine and salad dressings use alternative oils such as olive or flax as their base. If you are drinking milk alternatives, consider soy drinks that include flax seed products. Yet another source of ALA for vegetarians is grain breads. The biggest rule of thumb is to read labels since different brands use different sources.

Supplements

One of the biggest omega 3 sources for everyone is supplements. Supplements are not necessarily from a vegetable base, so vegetarians need to watch labels. Flax, hemp, and perilla oils are a few of the common supplements available.

All of the sources vary significantly in the actual omega 3 benefits your body receives. Fish oil, for example, requires two separate processes in order for your body to use the substance while flax oil requires three. One of the highest vegetarian sources of omega 3 is microalgae oil, which your body can begin to use immediately with no additional processing.

Algae oil gives you the maximum benefit of omega 3s.  In addition, microalgae oil contains the proper balance of EPA and DHA making it a far superior source to any other including fish oil.  Some vegetarians can now get the same EPA and DHA from a new product from Source-Omega called PURE ONE.

How to Reduce Inflammation the Easy Way – 7 Ways for 7 Days Without a Statin Drug December 6, 2008

by Scott Doughman, PhD

1) Think good fats over bad fats-NOW. Omega-3 oil, olive oil, eat in, reduce red meat, and eat more nuts. Satisfaction guaranteed. It works by increasing the amount of foods/supplements you eat that are rich in omega-3 DHA+EPA fats, lowers omega-6 fats, and balances fats to fight inflammation.

2) Get going and get moving, even a little. Don’t drive to the mailbox. Walking more – even at the mall - is a great way to lower inflammation without any of the side effects associated with medications.

3) Gain by loosing 6 pounds in 3 months, size matters. If you're a man or woman with a waist measurement of over 37 inches average, you probably have high inflammation and triglycerides. Whittling an inch off the waist by reducing your portions, good food choices and increasing activity can go a long long way.

4) Get enough sleep and listen to your body. A new study shows that elderly people with high blood pressure who sleep less than 7.5 hours a night have dramatically elevated chances of having a stroke or heart attack.

5) Reduce stress and cut back on watching CNN. High levels of stress hormones can lead to the release of excess inflammatory chemicals in the body.

6) Cut back on smoking. Smoking hardens the arteries and increase inflammation. But research shows you can reverse all the damaging effects to your arteries by quitting.

7) Wine not Whine. Keep positive and strong minded, then loosen up after work to play – just a little. Share the bottle too with friends a couple times per week.  Social contact is important for support.

What Are We Going To Do with Grandpa? November 28, 2008

Consider Omega3 DHA Therapy

by Scott Doughman, Ph.D.

omega-3

Grandpa doesn't have Alzheimer's, but last year he didn't remember much of anything except to tell the same old stories. It's obvious his short term memory is fading fast and he often struggles with remembering the grandkid's names. His memory medication doesn't seem to provide much relief and it's very expensive.

omega-3

Having a friend or family member suffering from cognitive decline is reason enough for us all to be concerned about it for ourselves. Believe it or not, 40% of people in the U.S. will face some form of cognitive decline in their lifetime.

omega-3

Fortunately, some bright news is coming in. Top researchers are now reporting that Alzheimer's, the worst form of dementia, may be linked to chronic DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) nutritional deficiencies. The growing rate of general dementia is increasingly linked to diet and omega3 DHA deficiency. Therefore, one's omega3 status is at the heart of the question: What are we going to do with grandpa? or grandma, uncle, etc. Supplementation with Omega-3 DHA may be part of the answer.

omega-3

In addition to research suggesting DHA is the only omega-3 that protects cognitive function, a recent Johns Hopkins Health Alert (johnshopkinshealthalerts.com) states that appropriate levels of dietary DHA alone could help prevent up to 70% of new Alzheimer's cases.DHA is the only omega-3 fatty acid to provide benefits that appear to promote a healthy brain and to decrease the rate of age related cognitive decline. DHA is part of the structure and function of the synapses of nerve cells.

omega-3

Fish oil EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) does not play a significant role in brain or neuronal membrane structure. EPA is only 2% to 3% of the omega-3s in nervous tissue although EPA is famous for having a significant anti-inflammatory function and is generally important in the body.

omega-3

DHA supplementation at 1200-2400 milligrams daily over a necessary 3 to 6 month accretion period is the serving strategy I have developed called Omega3 DHA Therapy™. This program can help eliminate DHA deficiency using a scientifically optimized method. Diagnostic services are not yet available, however Omega3 DHA Therapy allows one to follow a doctor recommended program to properly incorporate DHA using a daily dosing strategy.

omega-3

Anyone considering supplementing with Omega3 DHA should first consult with a doctor. So ask your Grandpa's doctor about DHA to go with the other vitamins and minerals he/she may have already recommended. DHA is often overlooked by doctors because it's not a prescription. The easy answer, "Eat more fish," is just not enough to properly deliver DHA benefits.

Normally, DHA is a minor part of omega-3s in fish oil, but new DHA products have arrived that are derived from DHA rich microalgae oils and fractionated fish oils. Microalgae oil is the source of marine DHA and the same source where wild fish omega-3 DHA comes from.

omega-3

Golden colored microalgae oil is organically grown in tanks in the U.S. and not exposed to contamination from ocean pollutants. Unlike the industrial pressures of over-fishing and the molecular distillation processes used to obtain fish oils, the DHA derived from microalgae is a truly "green" product processed in clinical grade facilities and the oil comes from a vegetarian source. DHA obtained from pure, sustainable microalgae sources gives naturally concentrated clinical grade DHA that does not come from a fish and does not have the fishy taste or smell.

omega-3

DHA can help grandpa. In fact, DHA is possibly the most important nutrient left unaddressed in modern medicine. In fact, DHA is recognized by the FDA as deficient in the modern diet.  Currently, DHA from microalgae oil is in Phase III clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for early and moderate dementia treatment at 2000 milligrams per day. This is the level considered ideal for building brain longevity. Because DHA is the hardest omega3 to get in the diet, it is recommended to take as a supplement, especially for people who are vegetarians. This knowledge is important because more than ever DHA deficiency appears to be a risk factor for most dementias.

Frequently Asked Questions - Answered November 11, 2008

Rosa commented:

omega-3

I have not noticed one bit of difference since using your product.

omega-3

Hi Rosa, the one bottle you purchased will not make too much difference.  DHA is not a drug.  Nutritional therapies and products take time.  Even if you take Lipitor, can you tell that your cholesterol is lower?  No.  Also with triglyceride lowering benefits, you will not notice the difference as a feeling.  We have anecdotal and measurable results from customers, however.  In fact, some have generally commented that they can tell a difference when they stopped after taking high-DHA levels over time.  The effects were stated as if they had stopped taking vitamins and noticed a difference.  DHA is powerful, but not like a drug.  It becomes part of you as structure/function support for organ tissues, especially the brain and reduces baseline inflammation over time.  It can take 3 months to get the full benefits.  Please see our home page for the list of benefits you can expect provided you take 4 capsules per day for 3 months. - Dr. Doughman

Luke asked:

Instead of swallowing the capsules I chew them sometimes to taste the oil.  Is this okay?

Yes. The oil has a light fresh feel and taste.  Microalgae oil has one of the longest shelf-lives of omega-3 oils with DHA/EPA because it has no animal peroxides. The expiration date is April 2010.   The oil we use was chosen because it is the most complex and nutritious (DHA + EPA + Vitamin D + Vitamin K + Phytosterols).   It is guaranteed for 2 years and is product tested. - Dr. Doughman

Some capsules seem to have solids.  Is this how it should be?

Yes, the solids you see are perfectly natural and safe, even ideal.  The small amount of saturated fat in the oil will appear from cool storage.  Like honey crystalizing, pure oils can seperate.  Think Palm Oil in summer versus winter.  It's the same with the palmitic fatty acid in the algae oil.  I keep bulk oil in our refrigerator at home and I like to use for adding to dishes, in the cool storage these trace fats settle out.  Another point is that the oil will not freeze as it is more than 50% long chain poly-unsaturated fatty acids. - Dr. Doughman

Vanessa asked:

Is your product safe to use in pregnancy and lactation?  Is it safe to use with a regular prenatal supplement?

Hi Vanessa, Yes, the oil is in fact FDA approved as Infant Formula Grade and is one of the safest products on the market for pregnant and nursing mothers.  It's excellent for post-partum health too.  Thank you for asking and I look forward to serving you further. - Dr. Doughman

PURE ONE Gives DHA, EPA, Vitamin D and Vitamin K Naturally October 23, 2008

Question: "Could you please clarify the following for me. The phytosterols, Vitamin K and Vitamin D present in Pure One - are they of natural origin and if so in what form are they present? What is the significance of these ingredients in brain, eye and heart health?"

Vitamins

Our Answer:

Thank you for the question about vitamin D & K and phytosterols.  I understand there are a lot of details.  In fact, this content is on our home page with references included; the vitamins and phytosterols are not associated with the brain eye heart benefits per se.  DHA is for a healthy brain eye heart.

Omega-3

All these components are naturally made by the microaglae.  In compariton, cod liver oil has vitamins A and D.  PURE ONE has Vitamins K and D.  Vitamins K and D work together.

omega-6

Note: Just like with true Vitamin A, also with Vitamin K, people need to note the levels taken.  Our highest recommended dose of PURE ONE – 8 Capsules Daily – gives just over 200% minimum daily value of vitamin K.  This is not too much at all, but we caution people to not duplicate vitamin K intake in their supplement program when taking PURE ONE and to first talk to their doctors if they are on prescription blood thinners.

omega-3

Vitamin K works with vitamin D to help calcium regulation and bone health.  Our oil is ideal for health and wellness at all ages and stages.

Omega-3 DHA

Phytosterols are a minor component, but these are discussed for two reasons A) they are heart healthy, B) these can apparently form solids inside the capsules over time and at cool temperatures.  This is a natural property some have noted.

Why Omega-3 DHA Therapy is a Real Clinical Solution October 17, 2008

One of the most established areas of research for marine omega-3 fatty acids like DHA is positive cognitive performance and reduced rates of age-related cognitive decline.  by Scott Doughman, Ph.D.

Two studies published in April 2007 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that regular consumption of omega-3-rich food could prevent age-related cognitive decline.  The studies, from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, and the University of North Carolina, stated that only a limited number of studies have looked at the decline in cognitive function that precedes these diseases.

Researchers have started focusing their attention on Alzheimer’s disease. A pre-clinical study, reported that DHA may cut the build-up of a certain protein linked to Alzheimer's (Journal of Neuroscience, April 2007, Vol. 27).  The study used genetically modified mice, and is reported to be the first study to show that DHA may slow the accumulation of a protein, tau, that leads to the development of neurofibrillary tangles, one of two signature brain injuries of Alzheimer's disease.

Recently, researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) used cells from mice, rats, and humans to show that the DHA-induced production of the protein LR11 may cut the build-up of plaque from beta-amyloid deposits (Journal of Neuroscience, Dec. 2007, Vol. 27, pp. 14299-14307).

Results of a clinical trial published in the Archives of Neurology (Vol. 63, pp. 1402-1408) reported that a daily supplement of 1720 mg DHA and 600 mg EPA showed promise for the slow mental decline in people with very mild Alzheimer's disease, but had no impact on people with more advanced forms.

Dr. Scott Doughman's clinical review of Schizochytrium Microalgae Oil (Current Diabetes Reviews, Aug. 2007, Vol. 3, pp. 198-203) established a clinical summary that together demonstrated why and how microalgae oil is a smarter clinical solution for ratio and dose of Omega-3, also suggesting lower triglycerides and reduced lipid oxidative stress are clear benefits of DHA supplementation using microalgae oil.

Omega 3 DHA - Is There a Dietary Deficiency in Kids and Adults? September 15, 2008

By Scott Doughman, Ph.D.

Omega 3 DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) has been getting lots of attention lately.

While many dieticians and pediatric and women's health experts have maintained for years that standard fish oil is vital for your body’s defense system against illness, only in the past decade has the medical community started to disseminate the facts that DHA is the most abundant omega-3 in the body and brain.

As research matures on omega 3 DHA fatty acid use, researchers are concluding that the essential DHA nutrient is absolutely indispensable to your health and wellness.  With positive press, more families are trying to get the omega 3 DHA they need without the contaminant risks from game fish like mackerel, sword fish, tuna and shark, all potentially risky as sources of omega 3 oil.

All you need is omega 3 DHA, with proper EPA fatty acid levels to boot.  Simply increasing your fish consumption is not always enough to keep you healthy.  Most diets – even the ones that incorporate fish two to three times a week – have too much omega 6 fatty acids versus omega 3.

A deficiency in the essential nutrient DHA can possibly lead to inflammatory disorders.  You may not wish to alter your entire diet, so you will need to take steps to balance your fatty acid profile.  You can dramatically increase your omega 3 intake with concentrated DHA oils from microalgae – a cleaner fresher and good tasting omega-3 source to replace the need for fish oil.

Nothing replaces your own research and consultation with your physician. Talk to your doctor if you are taking medications to determine if Omega-3 DHA Therapy is right for you.  The important thing is to act because most people are subtly suffering with this deficiency, possibly for their entire life, without ever knowing why they spend so much time craving what we can’t get from medications, the core nutrient building blocks we need.

Feed your brain.  An un-oiled chain doesn’t work so well.  So help prevent the rust and dust in the mind from building up.  Clear the brain’s blues with clinical omega-3 DHA.  Let the sun shine in and may the source be with you.

A Smarter Omega-3 for Kids and Adults August 31, 2008

It's a Better Omega-3 for Kids and Adults Because It's From the Source, has a Balanced Ratio of Omega-3s and is Grown in Quality Controlled Tanks - Grown Organically Pure for a Golden Microalgae Oil Omega-3 Extract.

by Scott Doughman, Ph.D.

1) You should learn that increasing the omega-3 DHA levels in the body involves storing omega-3s in the tissues as building blocks and that this accumulation is crucial to maintaining lifelong health.

2) In all its brilliance, you should learn about how the GOLDEN OMEGA-3 called DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, can unlock mechanisms that help the body heal itself.

3) You should learned about how Golden Microalgae Oil is an improved oil source so you don't have to take fish oil any more.

Now There is a Smarter Way Than Fish Oil August 31, 2008

Because you've learned that increasing your omega-3 intake is crucial to maintaining good health and taking fish oil supplements has been the recommended way to increase circulating omega-3s in the blood stream, now you are aware that now there IS a SMARTER way. by Scott Doughman, Ph.D.

  • You only need 2 capsules for every 5 fish oil capsules for the same DHA.
  • It's a FISH FREE solution that can legitimately challenge the need for fish oil for medical omega-3s DHA and EPA needed by kids and adults.
  • The new and improved supplement formula is now available using life's DHA at 300 mg DHA, a Source-Omega, LLC innovation.
  • 100% Vegan oil and capsule.

Notably, the U.S. and global demand for fish and fish oil for omega-3s has grown 10 fold in ten years, now doubling every 3-5 years, with science pointing to maximum natural fishing being exceeded in pace.  Our all-natural optimized omega3 oil is made from source microalgae oil for more golden DHA omega-3.  The more concentrated oil replaces the need for fish oil omega-3s.  Golden Microalgae Oil is a clinical grade oil that provides a sustainable, scalable solution without any harm to the environment.

Dr Doughman says "I also recently published on findings that a new potent microalgae oil extract matches your body's direct metabolic needs for ratio and dose of omega-3, with metabolically much better ratios than fish oil. Plus unlike fish oil, microalgae oil is a fresh extract that naturally contains phytosterols, vitamins K and D, and beneficial C22 Omega-DPA, a staple fatty acid found abundant in eggs and breast milk.  So the oil is ideal for brain health."

"I now claim our efforts are naturally improving upon fish oil by going to the omega-3 source, microalgae, the ultimate origin of where the fish oil omega-3s came from in the first place, through the food chain. I've seen the Ice-Algae studies and scientific reports. It is clear why only cold water fish have high omega-3s. It comes from their food."  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18220672

Vegetarian Fish Oil: ie microalgae oil, is better for kids since most fish oil EPA is not suited to what kids need. Most fish oil is largely EPA, considered more appropriate for heart health. EPA is a signaling molecule made as needed from DHA, based on the way the body actually uses omega-3s.  See http://www.webmd.com/dha-omega-3-center/dha-adults

DHA is by far the most abundant omega-3 in the organs. For the first time, a microalgae oil supplement has matched fish oil for omega-3 dose at 300 mg per capsule, but microalgae oil is more concentrated and thus comes in a slightly smaller capsule size than fish oil for the same or more omega-3. The larger dose means each capsule is easier to tolerate and ensures kids get enough DHA each day. Microalgae oil is for heart health too. 2 concentrated capsules have 600 mg DHA and 20 mg EPA to naturally match your body's and heart's actual omega-3 ratio's.  Soon the Phase III clinical trials of microalgae oil omega-3 DHA therapy for early and moderate dementia and Alzheimer's treatment will be completed in an NIH funded study.  See the 2g/day DHA dose used in the Dementia/Alzheimer's study at www.clinicaltrials.gov, search DHA and microalgae oil.
