Expert Evaluates Omega-3 DHA to EPA Ratio Controversy Using Algae Oil Models April, 2017

March 23, 2017 --( PR.com )-- Source-Omega Chief Scientific Officer and algae omega-3 expert, Dr. Scott Doughman, PhD, today answered frequently asked questions about the so-called DHA to EPA ratio controversy. Using past and present algae oil models, the case is presented in the form of a discussion, based on actual questions from around the world. The topic follows on from his recently authored 2016 Springer publication text book chapter on algae oil omega-3 safety and efficacy. Source-Omega LLC is developer of the Class 1 branded ingredient SOURCE OIL®, a Chromista oil (Schizochytrium sp.) that is water extracted from a select wild-type strain to eliminate all chemical and genetic modifications. The company maintains public health advocacy and scholarly publications in support of the DHA ratios present in human tissues, which are up to 97 percent of all omega-3 fatty acids found in the brain. Colleague Question: "I had a query from a client today who was comparing SOURCE OIL® vegetarian DHA to another algae oil omega-3 product. Her query was about the balance of DHA to EPA. Your product has 720mg DHA and 15mg EPA per 2 mL, the other source has 520mg DHA and 250 mg EPA per 2 mL. Why is there a difference?" Dr Doughman Answers: "Thank you for your question. Whereas all 16 published clinical studies and several reviews in algae oil have only included high DHA, low EPA oil versions in the studies, the ownership history of the oil behind the another ... read more

New Omega-3 Structure Function Claim for DHA-Rich Algae Oil October, 2012

Chapel Hill, NC, October 11, 2012 --( PR.com )-- Source-Omega today forwarded new structure function claims for dietary omega-3 intake from a single algae oil. Both omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are present in their oil. As a supplier, the company has defined DHA-rich algae oil uses in very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) biology. They say the literature clearly defines DHA as the inherent structural omega-3 in the outer lipoprotein phospholipid monolayer, as inherent to the mechanism of VLDL formation and VLDL fatty acid transport in regulated physiology. They say these data are well established in the literature, although the mechanism is what Source-Omega claims they are now able to more clearly define. "We claim DHA is the definitive omega-3 used by the liver to form VLDL. Also, DHA functions in VLDLs in the circulation to maintain steady state fatty acid transport, which is what appears to dose-dependently modify levels of plasma triglycerides in healthy individuals. We disclaim the intent to modify plasma triglyceride levels for any medical use, but medical doctors may recommend DHA-rich algae oil for this purpose. We think our methods will add compliance and basis to best practices to help guide health professionals and to inform the public health," said Scott Doughman, PhD, CEO and Chief Scientific Officer at Source-Omega, LLC. Source-Omega Reviews DHA Retroconversion Metabolic Dosing Using Algae Oil Omega-3s as a Fish Oil Substitute November, 2010

"What all the human omega-3 red blood cell data independently points out is that DHA is always 3 to 8 fold more abundant than EPA in human blood and tissues, even after prolonged intake of high doses of omega-3s predominantly as EPA," says company scientist. Source-Omega Reviews DHA Retroconversion Metabolic Dosing Using Algae Oil Omega-3s as a Fish Oil Substitute Chapel Hill, NC, November 10, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Today, Source-Omega revealed knowledge gained from their review of the omega-3 literature and published research. “What all the human omega-3 Red Blood Cell data independently point out is that DHA is always 3 to 8 fold more abundant than EPA in human blood and tissues, even after prolonged intake of high doses of omega-3s predominantly as EPA," says Scott Doughman, PhD., Chief Scientist at Source-Omega. Source-Omega revealed their discussion, forwarding that composition studies in 1978 proved DHA is naturally the most abundant omega-3 form in the human body and blood in comparison to EPA levels in untreated individuals (Sanders et al., 1978). In 1986, a review by Herold and Kinsella of human volunteers treated with fish oil omega-3s revealed higher DHA fatty acid composition in red blood cells compared to EPA, despite high EPA intake (Herold and Kinsella, 1986). Fish oils have been an abundant source of EPA, so fewer studies may have taken into consideration that DHA is the most abundant omega-3 long chain fatty acid because EPA was the main ... read more

Source-Omega’s Pure One Untouched by Seawater Pollution, Not Now, Not Ever July, 2010

For years, the lack of fish odor or reflux taste has led many people to microalgae oil instead of fish oil as a source for omega-3s. Another feature of microalgae oil is now more important than ever — it is not touched by any ocean, now or ever. Chapel Hill, NC, July 07, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Pure-One™, manufactured by North Carolina-based Source-Omega, is actually the same DHA-rich algae oil eaten by ocean fish. But instead of being distilled from fish oil, it is produced in enclosed culture systems, on land, without any pollution. It is the only plant-based vegan source of both EPA and DHA omega-3 made in the USA. Fish oil supplements are considered safe only after being decontaminated. “No fish are involved in the production of Pure-One,” said Scott Doughman, Ph.D., president and chief scientist at Source Omega. “There is no seawater contact, no pollution, no impurities in the growing process.” This purity is especially valuable now. The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico not only adds petroleum to the sea water, but the chemical dispersants used to fight oil spills may cause equal contamination. These concerns are now added to long-standing concern about mercury pollution, which are as critical as ever. A study published in June 2010 in Nature Geoscience demonstrates that methyl-mercury pollution lasts longer in oceans than in fresh water because of the sea salt. Mercury interferes with the brain and nervous system. read more

Source-Omega Founder Speaks on Microalgae Oil Omega-3 Replacements for Medical Fish Oils February, 2009

Source-Omega, LLC announced today it will be presenting at the upcoming International Symposia on Bioinformatics for Biomedical and Ecological Applications in Prasanthi Nilayam, India. The conference is being held during February 20-21, 2009 at the renowned Sri Sathya Sai University and is organized by Biosciences Chair Professor Srirama Krupanidhi. Chapel Hill, NC, February 20, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Source-Omega company Founder and Chief Scientist Scott Doughman, Ph.D. will present Saturday February 21, evidence that only one microalgae oil source for both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) omega-3 qualifies as a replacement for medical fish oils, including the prescription form of synthetic fish oil. Dr. Doughman is to discuss the importance of both DHA and EPA together for satisfying the regulatory guidance available for omega-3 oils regarding qualified heart health claims. He is also to discuss metabolic evidence that the naturally produced and scientifically optimized oil matches human clinical needs better than fish oils, particularly with respect to the intracellular fatty acid pathways known as the Kennedy cycle. “The ways our cells incorporate omega-3s are best matched by microalgae oil sources, plus there is no lingering fishy after effects, a major compliance issue facing fish oil omega-3 products” Doughman indicated. The Indian subcontinent harbors the largest vegetarian preferred population in the world, ... read more

Is Algae Oil Fuel or Nutrition? December, 2008

New algae oil products are valuable as Omega-3 DHA Therapy™ [patent pending] for high triglycerides and serving diabetes. A recent international peer reviewed publication places a question mark on biodiesel from algae oil as a current business model for commercialization. The future remains to be seen. Now, in contrast, the report points to commercial viability instead in omega-3 nutritional oils. Chapel Hill, NC, December 10, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Three dollar per gallon biodiesel is nothing compared to the one thousand dollar per gallon retail value of nutritional omega-3 oils made by algae. Currently, C. cohnii and Schizotrichium sp. microalgae oils are sold in international markets and in the U.S. with FDA approvals for pregnant and nursing consumers and for addition to infant formula, granted strong safety designations as a natural food oil. Very high levels of omega polyunsaturated fatty acid side chains may be the obscure reason why even after nearly 20 years of research, largely by the US government agency NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), algae oil research has not yet struck oil for fuel commercialization. Omega fats and their high unsaturation levels can be corrosive to engines and these easily oxidize during biofuel storage. The report identifies polyunsaturates as an obstacle that accelerates oxidation, polymerization, and gum formation in combustion engines. These and other issues ultimately prevent certification of the final ... read more
