Is Algae Oil Fuel or Nutrition? December, 2008

New algae oil products are valuable as Omega-3 DHA Therapy™ [patent pending] for high triglycerides and serving diabetes. A recent international peer reviewed publication places a question mark on biodiesel from algae oil as a current business model for commercialization. The future remains to be seen. Now, in contrast, the report points to commercial viability instead in omega-3 nutritional oils.

Chapel Hill, NC, December 10, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Three dollar per gallon biodiesel is nothing compared to the one thousand dollar per gallon retail value of nutritional omega-3 oils made by algae.

Currently, C. cohnii and Schizotrichium sp. microalgae oils are sold in international markets and in the U.S. with FDA approvals for pregnant and nursing consumers and for addition to infant formula, granted strong safety designations as a natural food oil.

Very high levels of omega polyunsaturated fatty acid side chains may be the obscure reason why even after nearly 20 years of research, largely by the US government agency NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), algae oil research has not yet struck oil for fuel commercialization. Omega fats and their high unsaturation levels can be corrosive to engines and these easily oxidize during biofuel storage.

The report identifies polyunsaturates as an obstacle that accelerates oxidation, polymerization, and gum formation in combustion engines. These and other issues ultimately prevent certification of the final biodiesel product for commercial sale, despite the high per acre yield potential when growing algae oils.

The near term value of microalgae oil may not be cheap fuel, but a rich golden nutritional oils. The global value of algae oil appears to have just started being realized in nutritional and clinical care products for the heart, eyes and brain.

Incredible India may be the future for algae oil research. Published in the Indian journal Everyman’s Science, VOL. XLIII NO. 3, Aug - Sept ’08, Pg 164-168, on behalf of Indian Science Congress Association, the article titled “Is Algae Oil Fuel Or Nutrition?” was written by Scott Doughman, PhD and Srirama Krupanidhi, PhD, each with The Department of Biosciences, Sri Sathya Sai University, Prasanthi Nilayam, 515134, India. While with the Department of Nutrition, School of Public Health, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, 25799, USA, Dr. Doughman established the basis for a new company called Source-Omega, LLC.

The company was formed after Dr. Doughman first published a review of algae oil clinical trials; Doughman SD, Krupanidhi S, Sanjeevi CB, Omega-3 fatty acids for nutrition and medicine: considering microalgae oil as a vegetarian source of EPA and DHA, Current Diabetes Reviews, 2007 Aug;3(3):198-203, Bantham Press. Currently, the company’s docosahexaenoic acid therapy is promoted as a clinically optimized nutritional support program for lowering high triglycerides, plus the emerging uses by clinics for reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's dementia onset. Other than DHA, no other long-chain fatty acid demonstrates these brain health benefits.

Source-Omega, LLC, Chapel Hill North Carolina, USA, located near the Research Triangle Park, was founded by Dr Doughman in 2007, specializing in the branding, marketing and globalization of algae oil products as a leading distributor the brand names PURE ONE™ for the next generation plant based omega-3 and Omega-3 DHA Therapy™. The company manufactures DHA supplement products as a sustainable plant based source of DHA omega-3. For more information on Source-Omega visit www.source-omega.com.

Better Omega 3 Supplements Requested by Medical Professionals

Omega 3 has been talked about in the media a lot these days. With all the health claims, many people may be thinking it is the alternative and holistic health parishioners only that are pushing the use of omega-3 supplements, when in fact many medical professionals are also seeing the benefits of Omega 3 and making recemmendations.  Our modern diets, which include more packages foods and less whole foods, especially farmed fish problems are very high low in omega-3 polyunsaturated fats.  These are typically found in fatty fish like salmon or tuna becaused marine microalgae have these in the food the fish eat.  What if you cultured the pure golden oil from one microalgae strain into huge volumes for tons and tons of omega-3 oil.  One of the best ways to take Omega 3 supplements is from Source Schizochytrium Oil.  The only well-known omega 3 source on the market to contain both DHA and EPA.  All other Omega 3 supplements made from plant based oils such as flax only contain ALA, which needs converted by the body into DHA and EPA.
