DHA Omega-3 Algae Oil May Be Ideal During Flu Season

Interview of Scott Doughman, PhD by Veganlife's Pernilla Karlsson, PhD.
Veganlife: Many doctors warn their patients to not take omega 3 supplements during flu times. Is there a reasonable explanation? Can you take Pure One DHA during flu times?
Doughman: " Do not take any supplement while sick that is not under doctors orders. Omega-3s are fine before and after sickness like flu. There is no evidence that omega-3s cause immune suppression in healthy individuals. Where the concern might come from is in the anti-inflammatory potential. EPA is very high in fish and EPA is considerably more active in the plasma when it is spiked into the system, where it can act anti-inflammatory and perhaps have a negative input on the immune system. Pure One contains more DHA than EPA. DHA is better in this case as it is not as active while in the plasma. DHA is more beneficial when incorporated into cells and tissue systems"
Veganlife: Pure One will soon be launched in Sweden. What is Pure One and what are the main benefits?
Doughman: "Pure One is an innovation in omega-3 fatty acids. Pure One is a next generation plant based omega-3 offering the highest per capsule dosage of all natural DHA, at 300 milligrams DHA, plus 10 milligrams EPA.  The all natural oil is derived from algae grown in enclosed tanks. The all natural capsule is a breakthrough vegan softgel, also derived from algae."
Veganlife: Why do we need supplements with DHA/EPA? Wouldn’t it be good enough to rely on flax oil or other oil high in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) as the main omega 3 source?
Doughman: "Mothers know about folic acid, but now all mothers also need to know about DHA omega-3 too. DHA is the most abundant omega-3 in our bodies. DHA is an essential fatty acid important for growing and maintaining brain, eyes and heart health. A common mistake is to rely on flax or other oils high in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) as the only concentrated form of omega 3. Although, flax oil can be inefficiently converted into EPA by enzymes in the body, the conversion to DHA is not efficient enough for most individuals to get adequate DHA support for the body and brain throughout their lifetimes."
Veganlife: Who can benefit from Pure One? Are there certain groups in the population with extra needs?
Doughman: "All people all over the world at all stages of life can benefit from Pure One. There are no risks for people with fish allergies, diabetics, pregnant mothers, nursing mothers, vegetarians, vegans, athletes, children and infants when used as directed. Doctors also can benefit their patients too. From prenatal care to geriatric health, Pure One is able to replace fish oil by delivering the same benefits with the same omega-3s, but from a cleaner source providing better ratios of omega-3s."
Veganlife: The amount and quality of fat in the diet is a hot topic in most countries. Would you like to give general advice to people in Sweden?
Doughman: "Generally the daily doses of the good fats, especially omega-3, should be increased in the diet while decreasing the bad fats. Fat is an issue of food choice. Taking fat out of food does not make the food better. It is known that high carbohydrate levels from sugar drinks at an average of 300 extra calories per day is more of a problem than fat in what contributes most to being overweight. Extra sugar and snacks in the diet gets stored as fat. People in Sweden with special diets and with babies also may wish to pay attention to possible fatty acid deficiencies in the very young."
